Nigeria Takes Over G-24 Chairmanship

Nigeria will assume the chairmanship of the Intergovernmental Group of Twenty‑Four (G‑24) on 1 November 2025, succeeding Argentina. The announcement was made by the Central Bank of Nigeria through its official social‑media channel. Established in 1971, the G‑24 serves as a forum for developing nations to coordinate their positions on international monetary policy and development financing, ensuring that their collective voice is heard in global economic decision‑making.

The transition follows Nigeria’s federal government call in 2024 for increased investment and trade partnerships with G‑24 member countries. As the new chair, Nigeria will present its Work Programme after a thorough consultation process. The G‑24 plays a crucial role in fostering inclusive dialogue and reform in the global economy, and Nigeria’s leadership is expected to strengthen the group’s influence.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to advancing the G‑24’s mission of inclusive growth, equity, and global stability. The governor highlighted the importance of maintaining momentum in areas most critical to member countries and expressed eagerness to collaborate with members to achieve these goals.

Nigeria’s assumption of the G‑24 chairmanship is significant, offering the country a more prominent role in shaping global economic policies and promoting the interests of emerging and developing economies. With its new leadership position, Nigeria is determined to keep the G‑24 a strong platform for representing the common interests of its members. As the global economy evolves, Nigeria’s chairmanship is expected to contribute to more inclusive and equitable economic decision‑making.
