Interface with ASUU personally, resolve issues permanently – Don advises Tinubu — Daily Nigerian

Dr. Mark Nyitse, a senior lecturer in the Education Faculty at Federal University Kashere in Gombe State, has called on President Bola Tinubu to engage directly with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to achieve a permanent resolution to the ongoing disputes. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, Nyitse argued that the President’s personal involvement could produce a lasting solution.

Nyitse praised President Tinubu’s capacity to tackle national challenges through bold reforms, citing his decisive removal of the fuel subsidy as an example of fearless leadership. He stressed that a robust education system is essential for building a strong economy and that resolving the sector’s problems should be a priority.

Drawing a historical parallel, Nyitse referenced former President Yakubu Gowon’s attempts to address challenges in the nursing profession. He noted that, despite a 2009 agreement with ASUU, little progress has been made and only temporary measures have been implemented.

Describing ASUU as a patient union representing intellectuals from diverse backgrounds, including those in positions of power, Nyitse highlighted the financial hardships lecturers face. He explained that advancing academic careers requires substantial investment in research and publication, especially when promoting work in reputable, peer‑reviewed journals. The relatively low earnings of lecturers make these costs discouraging.

Nyitse believes that President Tinubu’s direct engagement with ASUU could break the deadlock in the ongoing disputes. By addressing the underlying issues, the government could create a more stable and supportive environment for the education sector. As the situation unfolds, the President’s approach to the challenges confronting the academic community will be crucial for the development of Nigeria’s education system and, consequently, its economy.
