Atiku's exit will not make any dent on PDP -- Makinde — Daily Nigerian

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde warned that Nigeria’s chronic hunger and poverty remain unresolved, even as high‑profile defections to the All Progressives Congress dominate headlines. In his bi‑monthly newsletter, he said the focus on political realignments has eclipsed the country’s pressing problems, especially for families forced to make difficult choices amid economic hardship.

Makinde noted that a wave of defections by governors and lawmakers from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC has drawn attention away from the “defection of hunger and poverty,” which continues to afflict Nigerian households. He cautioned that widening inequality is fueling frustration and despair, with the poor bearing the brunt of the crisis. According to the governor, hunger—not partisanship—is deepening hopelessness among citizens.

The governor urged the PDP to rebuild public trust by offering credible solutions to economic hardship. He emphasized that the outcome of the 2027 general election will be decided by Nigerians, not by political maneuvers, and that the party’s upcoming national convention in Ibadan presents an opportunity to reset and reaffirm its values. Makinde stressed that politics must serve humanity, and that the party should prioritize the needs of the people over political convenience.

His statements highlight the ongoing challenges facing Nigeria—poverty, hunger, and inequality—as the country approaches the 2027 election. While political defections are likely to remain in the spotlight, Makinde’s remarks serve as a reminder that addressing these underlying issues is essential for meaningful change.
