The Labour Party, led by Nenadi Usman, has called for the arrest of May Agbamuche-Mbu, Acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, over alleged collusion with Julius Abure. The demand was made in a statement issued by the party’s Interim National Spokesman, Toni Akeni, in Abuja.
According to the statement, the party has uncovered what it describes as a brazen assault on Nigeria’s democracy, allegedly orchestrated by Mrs Agbamuche-Mbu in collusion with Abure. The party takes issue with the acting INEC boss’s decision to invite Abure to a meeting with the leadership of the 18 registered political parties, despite a subsisting Supreme Court judgment.
The acting INEC chairman had stated that the commission was merely obeying a court order, claiming that if the faction led by Senator Nenadi Usman presented a valid judgment in their favour, the Commission would comply accordingly. However, an investigation by the party found that no such court order exists.
It was revealed that Mr Abure had filed a suit against INEC, but a request for a Certified True Copy of any order purportedly recognising him as Chairman was met with confirmation from the court that no such order was ever granted. The party has challenged Mrs Agbamuche-Mbu to produce the court order she relied upon to accord recognition to Abure.
