Actor Williams Uchemba calls for public execution of kidnappers to curb rising insecurity

Nigerian actor Williams Uchemba has called on the government to implement public executions for convicted kidnappers, arguing that visible and decisive punishment is needed to deter the country’s rising wave of abductions. In a video posted on his Instagram page, Uchemba expressed frustration with what he sees as the government’s failure to enforce existing capital‑punishment laws, contending that the lack of strict consequences emboldens criminals to act with impunity.

Uchemba pointed to China as an example, noting that the country’s use of the death penalty for serious crimes such as kidnapping and corruption has contributed to its relatively low crime rate. He emphasized that, although Nigerian law already stipulates the death penalty for kidnapping, the outcomes of convictions are often not publicly known. He suggested that broadcasting the arrest and execution of convicted kidnappers could serve as a powerful deterrent and help restore public confidence in the justice system.

His comments come amid a surge in kidnapping incidents across Nigeria, especially as the festive season approaches—a period traditionally associated with increased criminal activity. The actor urged authorities to act decisively, proposing that firm and public enforcement of justice would curb the crime wave and reassure the public.

Uchemba’s proposal has attracted attention as the Nigerian government faces criticism for its handling of the kidnapping crisis. With safety and security concerns heightened during the upcoming holidays, the government’s response to the escalating abductions will be closely watched, underscoring the need for a more decisive approach to combating kidnapping and restoring trust in the justice system.
