EFCC operation not abduction in Akwa Ibom students lodge

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has dismissed reports of an armed raid on a students’ lodge in Ikot Ekpene, where 15 students were allegedly abducted and valuables stolen. According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the incident was not a case of abduction by unknown gunmen, but rather a lawful operation conducted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Uyo Zonal Office.

The police received a distress call on October 24, 2025, at approximately 4:30 am, reporting an armed robbery operation in Ikot Uboh Village, Ikot Ekpene. In response, the police quickly mobilized and deployed tactical teams to the scene, cordoning off the area to engage the perceived threat. Upon arrival, the officers encountered operatives from the EFCC, who were conducting a sanctioned operation. Several individuals were arrested by the EFCC during this operation, contrary to media reports claiming they were abducted.

The police spokesperson emphasized the importance of verifying facts with the Command before publishing reports, acknowledging the crucial role of the press in society. Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammad Azare, commended the officers involved for their professional conduct and restraint, which prevented a potentially ugly incident. Azare also urged all law enforcement agencies to notify and cooperate with the police, as the lead security agency in the state, when carrying out operations within their area of responsibility.

This incident highlights the need for effective communication and coordination between law enforcement agencies to prevent misunderstandings and ensure public safety. The police Command’s swift response and professional handling of the situation averted a potential crisis, and their clarification has helped to alleviate concerns and misinformation. As the police continue to work with other agencies to maintain law and order in Akwa Ibom State, the importance of accurate reporting and cooperation cannot be overstated.
