Afghan Women Football Team Makes Historic Return

The Afghan Women United football team has made a significant return to the international stage, competing in the FIFA Unites tournament currently underway in Morocco. This marks their first match since 2021, prior to the Taliban’s takeover of the country, after which the team has been practicing in exile.

Team captain Fatima Haidari described this moment as the most significant of her life and that of her teammates. “To stand on an international stage after four years, it’s the most significant moment of my life and for the girls, absolutely. And we are looking forward to being on the pitch, playing together, and showing who we truly are,” she stated.

For many players, this tournament represents a highlight in their football careers, particularly given that Afghanistan is ranked low by FIFA. The competition features teams from Afghanistan, Chad, Libya, and Tunisia, all vying for success in Morocco. The match against Chad was an emotional return for Afghan women’s football, marking their first involvement in an international tournament under the name Afghan Women United, a team formed earlier this year in collaboration with FIFA.

This historic four-team event is part of FIFA’s broader efforts to promote and protect the rights of women and girls in football, providing them with the opportunity to pursue their dreams and thrive through the sport. The tournament underscores the importance of inclusivity and equality in sports, offering a platform for teams from countries with limited opportunities to participate in international competitions.

The participation of Afghan Women United in the FIFA Unites tournament is a testament to the perseverance and dedication of the team, who have continued to practice and strive for excellence despite the challenges they face. As the tournament progresses, the team will look to make the most of this opportunity, competing against teams from Chad, Libya, and Tunisia, and inspiring others through their determination and passion for the sport. The event reinforces the significance of football as a unifying force, promoting empowerment and development for women and girls around the world.
