The United Nations Security Council has expressed grave concern over the escalating violence in and around El Fasher, North Darfur, condemning the Rapid Support Forces’ (RSF) assault on the city. It recalled resolution 2736, which demands that the RSF lift the siege of El Fasher and calls for an immediate halt to the fighting. The conflict has devastated the civilian population, with reports of atrocities such as summary executions and arbitrary detentions, prompting the Council to urge that all perpetrators be held accountable.
The Council emphasized that all parties must protect civilians and comply with their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law. It called for the protection of humanitarian personnel, their premises, and assets, and demanded that all sides allow safe and unhindered humanitarian access in line with international law to address the growing humanitarian crisis.
The Sudan conflict has raised concerns about the risk of large‑scale, including ethnically motivated, atrocities. The Council reiterated the priority of resuming talks to achieve a lasting ceasefire and a comprehensive, inclusive, Sudanese‑owned political process. It urged all member states to refrain from external interference that could exacerbate the conflict and instability, and instead to support efforts for durable peace while respecting their international legal obligations.
Reaffirming its commitment to Sudan’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity, the Council rejected the establishment of a parallel governing authority in areas controlled by the RSF. As the situation continues to deteriorate, the international community calls for a peaceful resolution. The next steps are likely to involve continued diplomatic efforts to facilitate a ceasefire and a return to negotiations, aiming for a lasting solution to the crisis.
