Gov Alia approves implementation of unions' demands at Benue varsity

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has approved the immediate implementation of the demands made by striking workers at Moses Orshio Adasu University in Makurdi. The decision follows negotiations among the state government, university management, and the unions representing academic and non‑academic staff, culminating in a Memorandum of Agreement that addresses the contentious issues that have fueled industrial unrest since 2018. The governor, who also serves as the university’s visitor, gave his approval in a letter dated 31 October 2025. The document, signed by the Permanent Secretary for General Services on behalf of the Secretary to the State Government, outlines the agreed‑upon terms.

According to the university’s registrar, Barnabas Hema, the approved demands include the implementation of a new minimum‑wage template, payment of arrears from November 2023, and proper placement and payment of salary entitlements for promoted staff. The state government has also committed to paying arrears of deferred promotion entitlements to deserving staff, while accumulated entitlements dating back to 2018 will be addressed at a later date. In addition, efforts are underway to recruit a new vice‑chancellor for the university.

University management has expressed appreciation for the governor’s intervention, noting that it addresses long‑standing welfare concerns that had caused industrial disharmony. The development is expected to end the prolonged industrial action that disrupted academic activities, restoring normalcy and stability to the institution. With the state government’s commitment to staff welfare, the university can now refocus on its core mission of providing quality education to its students, a positive outcome for both the university community and the state as a whole.
