The Federal Government of Nigeria has appointed Dr. John Nwabueze as the country’s first Tax Ombudsman, in accordance with the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Act, 2025. This appointment forms part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s broader effort to reform the nation’s tax and revenue administration framework.
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga described Dr. Nwabueze’s selection as a significant step toward greater transparency and accountability in the tax system. Dr. Nwabueze brings extensive experience from both the public and private sectors. He previously served as Managing Partner of a reputable tax advisory firm and as Technical Adviser to the Joint Senate Committees on the Federal Capital Territory and Finance of the National Assembly. He holds a Doctor of Business Administration (Finance) from Walden University in Minneapolis, USA, and additional degrees from Strayer University, Washington, D.C., and the University of Jos, Nigeria. His expertise in finance and taxation is expected to shape Nigeria’s tax administration.
The Office of the Tax Ombudsman has been created to provide a structured mechanism for resolving disputes between taxpayers and revenue authorities. It will receive, review, and resolve complaints concerning taxes, levies, customs duties, and related issues. Dr. Nwabueze’s primary responsibility will be to manage these disputes efficiently and impartially, protecting taxpayers’ rights against arbitrary or abusive actions by tax officials.
President Tinubu expressed confidence that Dr. Nwabueze will discharge his duties with integrity and professionalism. The establishment of a Tax Ombudsman marks a significant development in Nigeria’s quest to strengthen tax administration, promote transparency, and enhance public confidence in a fair, impartial dispute‑resolution process.
