Senate Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro has condemned the recent attacks by suspected herders in the Benue South Senatorial District, calling them “barbaric and cowardly.” The assaults, which took place on Tuesday, left several people dead, displaced many residents and destroyed property worth millions of naira. Armed Fulani herdsmen reportedly stormed Rijo in the Utonkon community of Ado Local Government Area and Anwule in the Oglewu community of Ohimini Local Government Area, targeting farmers in their fields and villagers in their homes. Using machetes and other weapons, the attackers killed several individuals and left others missing.
In a statement released by his media aide Emmanuel Echeofun, Senator Moro expressed deep concern over the recurring violence against his constituents. He demanded urgent intervention from the relevant government agencies, questioning why no arrests or prosecutions have followed the frequent attacks in Zone C. The senator urged security agents to adopt proactive measures to prevent future incidents and to ensure that those responsible for the latest attacks are brought to justice. He also extended his condolences to the victims’ families and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
The attacks on Benue State communities have been a persistent problem, prompting calls for a stronger security presence and effective preventive measures. The Nigerian government faces mounting pressure to address the ongoing herder‑farmer conflict, which has caused significant loss of life and property. The latest violence underscores the need for a comprehensive strategy that tackles the root causes of the conflict and guarantees the safety and security of the region’s communities. As events unfold, it is essential for the government to take concrete steps to halt further violence and promote peaceful coexistence among the different groups.
