The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has carried out a major operation in Nigeria’s South West region, destroying counterfeit, expired and substandard products worth approximately 20 billion naira. The destruction took place at the Moniya dumpsite in Ibadan, Oyo State, as part of the agency’s ongoing effort to protect public health and remove unsafe and falsified items from the market.
The seized items included substandard and fake medicines, unsafe processed foods, counterfeit cosmetics and a variety of expired goods confiscated from manufacturers, importers and distributors across the region. In addition, expired and damaged products voluntarily handed over by compliant companies, non‑governmental organisations and trade groups were also destroyed.
NAFDAC’s operation aims to prevent these dangerous products from re‑entering circulation, thereby safeguarding the health of Nigerian consumers. The exercise underscores the importance of regulatory measures in ensuring the safety and quality of market‑available products and highlights the agency’s commitment to public‑health protection.
The destruction of these goods represents a significant step in NAFDAC’s fight against the proliferation of counterfeit and substandard items, which pose a serious threat to public health and safety. By removing them from the supply chain, the agency helps prevent harm to consumers and promotes a safer, more regulated market.
The operation also demonstrates NAFDAC’s collaboration with stakeholders—including manufacturers, importers and distributors—who have voluntarily handed over expired and damaged products for destruction. Such cooperation is essential for effective regulatory enforcement and for fostering a culture of compliance and responsibility among industry players.
As NAFDAC continues its work to protect public health and promote a safe, regulated market, its efforts serve as a reminder of the need for vigilance and cooperation in preventing the circulation of counterfeit and substandard products. By taking proactive measures to eliminate these items, NAFDAC safeguards the health and well‑being of consumers in Nigeria and helps build a more trustworthy market.
