Israel fires on UN troops — RT World News

A recent incident in southern Lebanon has heightened tensions between Israel and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). UNIFIL reported that Israeli forces fired on one of its patrols, describing the act as “a serious violation” of the cease‑fire agreement between Israel and Lebanon. The exchange occurred under poor weather conditions, and no casualties were reported.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged the incident, stating that they had identified two suspects in the El Hamames area and fired warning shots. After reviewing the event, the IDF concluded that the suspects were UN soldiers conducting a patrol and that the firing was a mistake caused by the adverse weather. The IDF emphasized that no deliberate fire was directed at UNIFIL personnel.

Lebanon has accused Israel of violating its sovereignty and destabilising the region. The Israel‑Lebanon border has long been volatile, with frequent exchanges of strikes between Israel and the Lebanese paramilitary group Hezbollah. Tensions escalated after the 2023 Israel‑Hamas conflict, when Hezbollah launched rockets and missiles into Israel, prompting Israeli retaliation. In late 2024, Israeli forces crossed into southern Lebanon, but a cease‑fire agreement required a full withdrawal. Israel has only partially withdrawn, maintaining several outposts and citing Hezbollah’s continued presence as a threat.

UNIFIL has called on the IDF to cease any aggressive behavior toward peacekeepers, stressing the need for stability in the area. The incident underscores the persistent instability along the Israel‑Lebanon border. UNIFIL reiterated its commitment to supporting a return to stability, and the international community will be monitoring the situation closely. Given the complex history and ongoing conflicts, the episode serves as a reminder of the necessity for continued diplomacy and efforts toward a lasting peace.
