Hyundai Motor Group has announced a landmark investment of $85.8 billion in South Korea over the next five years, the largest domestic commitment in the company’s history. The funding will concentrate on advanced technologies—artificial intelligence, robotics, and electrification—accounting for roughly 40 % of the total spend. Hyundai says the investment will help develop Korea’s AI and robotics innovation ecosystem and demonstrate the firm’s agility in a rapidly changing global business environment.

The plan also aims to boost exports of South Korean‑made vehicles by 13 %, reaching 2.47 million units by 2030. In addition to traditional automotive production, Hyundai will focus on software‑defined vehicles, hydrogen fuel‑cell technology, and other emerging fields. The group, which includes Kia, sold more than 7.2 million vehicles worldwide last year.

Hyundai’s announcement follows Samsung Group’s pledge to invest $310 billion over the same period, primarily in artificial intelligence. Samsung Electronics, a key supplier of memory chips, provides essential components for AI infrastructure.

The investment comes after Seoul concluded a new trade deal with Washington that lowers tariffs on South Korean exports, including Hyundai vehicles, from 25 % to 15 %. Although the rate remains higher than the 2.5 % tariff under an existing free‑trade pact, the reduced duties are expected to benefit the economy. Overall, Hyundai’s commitment underscores its dedication to innovation and its role in driving growth for South Korea’s automotive and technology sectors, with lasting implications for the country’s economic standing and global market position.
