Emir of Kano urges caution in peace deals with bandits, warns against cross border attacks

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has warned communities in Katsina State against signing peace agreements with bandits that could unintentionally give these armed groups freedom to attack neighboring states. Such peace deals have become common in parts of northern Nigeria, especially in Katsina, where bandits often attend dialogue meetings while openly carrying sophisticated weapons. Local residents fear that each announced peace deal in a local government area may precede new attacks by the same groups, heightening anxiety in neighboring communities and border states and creating a climate of uncertainty and insecurity.

During a recent visit to the Bagwai and Shanono Local Government Areas of Kano State—areas that had suffered bandit attacks—Sanusi stressed that while peace arrangements might reduce violence locally, they must not create a safe corridor for gunmen to move into other states and spread terror. He urged residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious movements promptly to security agencies. The Emir also praised the Kano State Government for its proactive measures to curb the infiltration of bandits into the state.

Sanusi’s visit was intended to commiserate with victims and their families, underscoring the need for collective action against the growing insecurity in the region. The issue of banditry and the pursuit of peace deals in northern Nigeria highlights the complex security challenges facing the area. As efforts to address these challenges continue, it is crucial that any solutions do not inadvertently compromise the safety of neighboring communities. Calls for vigilance and cooperation with security agencies are essential steps toward effectively combating the threat posed by armed groups. By prioritizing security and stability, the region can aim to create an environment where peace is sustained without endangering any community.
