China has regained its position as Germany’s top trading partner, overtaking the United States, according to recent data from the federal statistics agency Destatis. From January to September this year, total trade between Germany and China reached nearly €186 billion, a slight increase over the same period last year. In contrast, trade with the United States fell by almost four percent to just under €185 billion.

The decline in German‑US trade reflects the impact of tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump. ING economist Carsten Brzeski notes that these duties have hurt German exports, and a deal struck in July now subjects EU exports to a baseline levy of 15 percent—significantly higher than before. Despite the tariffs, the United States remains Germany’s largest export market and yields a substantial trade surplus for Berlin.

Germany, however, runs a trade deficit with China, a situation that poses a major challenge as the country seeks to reduce its economic reliance on Beijing. Dependence on Chinese rare earths, semiconductors and other input goods is increasingly problematic, especially as China is viewed more as a competitor than a partner. This shift in trade dynamics comes amid broader economic difficulties for Germany, including sluggish growth and the looming risk of a recession.

Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil is currently on a visit to China, marking the first trip by a representative of Germany’s ruling coalition to the world’s second‑largest economy. The mission underscores Germany’s struggle to balance its economic ties with China while navigating the pressures of US tariffs. Chancellor Friedrich Merz has pledged to revive the economy through a debt‑financed spending surge on defence and infrastructure, but the path ahead remains uncertain as Germany strives to manage its relationships with both China and the United States.
