US: Survivors grapple with mixed emotions over release of Epstein files

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed a bill that requires the Justice Department to release all files and communications related to the case of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The legislation, which passed the House of Representatives and the Senate with overwhelming majorities, mandates that the department make the documents public within 30 days. The release will include information about the investigation into Epstein’s death in a federal prison in 2019, and redactions will be allowed only to protect the identities of victims who are part of ongoing federal investigations. The Justice Department is expressly prohibited from withholding any material on the grounds of “embarrassment, reputational harm, or political sensitivity.”

The reaction from women who survived Epstein’s abuse has been mixed. Some survivors worry that the files could be manipulated, while others see the disclosure as an opportunity for public reckoning and healing. Haley Robson, an Epstein accuser, said she felt a blend of happiness, hope, and skepticism upon hearing the news, questioning the motivations behind the move. Marina Lacerda, who was 14 when the abuse began, hopes the released documents will clarify her personal experiences, which have long been obscured by trauma.

The demand for the Epstein files has been a longstanding priority of Trump’s “Make America Great Again” base, even as some of the president’s closest allies have promoted conspiracy theories about a cover‑up. Although Trump has consistently denied knowledge of Epstein’s crimes despite their documented friendship, he initially resisted publishing the documents. He eventually signed the bill after political pressure from his own party.

The signing marks a significant development in a case that has been mired in controversy and speculation. As the Justice Department prepares to release the files, Epstein’s accusers and the broader public await new information that could shed light on the circumstances of Epstein’s death and the full extent of his abuse. The disclosure is expected to be a major step toward transparency and accountability, and its impact will be closely monitored in the coming weeks.
