The Akwa Ibom State Police Command convened a stakeholders’ security meeting to address the recent surge in insecurity in parts of Nigeria. Led by Commissioner of Police Mohammed Baba Azare, the gathering brought together traditional rulers, religious leaders, market and transport unions, student unions and community groups to review the state’s security situation and strengthen collaborative efforts for peace and stability.
During the meeting, Azare refuted online reports that insurgents and Boko Haram terrorists had infiltrated Akwa Ibom, warning that such false information can sow fear among residents. He reassured attendees that the state remains peaceful and secure, with the police working closely with other security agencies to maintain robust patrols, effective surveillance and intelligence‑driven operations.
The commissioner expressed concern over the spread of fake news and unverified security alerts on social media, noting that they can cause panic and undermine public confidence. He emphasized the need for communities to take ownership of security by exposing criminal elements involved in armed robbery, cultism and vandalism. Azare warned that shielding or protecting criminals compromises community safety and urged traditional and religious leaders, youth groups and civil‑society organisations to cooperate with the police to sustain the state’s peaceful environment.
Stakeholders, including Bishop Chris Nyong, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, and Franklyn Isong, Chairman of the Centre for Human Rights and Accountability Network, praised the police command’s efforts to ensure peace and safety. They offered observations and commitments to strengthen security collaboration and pledged support for initiatives aimed at sustaining peace and security.
The meeting reinforced the importance of collaboration between the police and community stakeholders in maintaining security. With the police committed to robust measures and stakeholders pledging their support, Akwa Ibom State is poised to continue enjoying a peaceful and stable environment. The police command’s proactive approach to addressing security concerns and debunking false reports demonstrates its dedication to maintaining public trust and safety.
