Niger Gov Bago decry lack of responsible use of social media

Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago voiced concern over the increasing trend of Nigerian students using social media to spread negative information about the country. During a visit by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) executives, led by President Olushola Oladoja, at the Government House in Minna, Bago urged the association to promote patriotism and responsible social media use among students. He emphasized that social media platforms should foster nationalism and love for Nigeria, and encouraged the student body to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s initiatives, especially in food security, by establishing student farms. Bago believes such farms will promote self‑sufficiency and contribute to the nation’s overall food security.

In response, NANS President Oladoja pledged that the association will launch a sensitisation campaign to encourage dialogue and effective communication among students. The campaign aims to educate students on resolving issues through constructive dialogue rather than resorting to negative social media posts. Oladoja praised President Tinubu’s initiatives, including the introduction of zero‑interest student loans, and thanked Governor Bago for his support through scholarships and youth appointments.

The meeting highlights growing concern among Nigerian leaders about the impact of social media on the country’s image and the need for responsible usage. As students constitute a significant segment of social media users, the association’s efforts to promote patriotism and constructive dialogue are seen as crucial in shaping the online narrative about Nigeria. By supporting government initiatives and encouraging responsible social media practices, the student body can play a vital role in fostering a positive image of the country and contributing to its development.
