Sule-Lamido

Former Jigawa State Governor Alhaji Sule Lamido has given the Peoples Democratic Party a 10‑day ultimatum to resolve its internal crisis. Speaking to supporters at his office in Kano, he called for the dissolution of the recent Ibadan elective convention and the formation of a national caretaker committee. Lamido said the party’s lingering turmoil and his own sidelining by “new forces” within the PDP threaten his political relevance, and he framed his intervention as a defence of the party’s legacy and his fundamental rights, which he claims have been violated.

According to Lamido, Umar Damagum and Samuel Anyanwu remain the legitimate leaders of the PDP until their tenure expires on 8 December 2025. He warned that the absence of clear leadership structures could jeopardise the future of aspirants and incumbent office‑holders. Lamido urged PDP leaders, including Nyesom Wike and Damagum, to reconcile and support the creation of a unified caretaker body, and he called for a joint meeting to address the party’s challenges and restore its standing in national politics.

The PDP has been embroiled in a leadership crisis marked by conflicting court decisions and factional divisions. A Federal High Court in Abuja restrained the party from proceeding with the Ibadan convention, while an Oyo State High Court granted clearance for the event. The crisis deepened when a faction aligned with Wike boycotted the convention, declaring it illegal and unconstitutional. Several state chapters, including Rivers State, rejected the convention, citing breakdowns in communication and disregard for due process.

Lamido appealed to his supporters to remain calm and patient until 8 December to see how events unfold. The party’s leadership crisis has significant implications for its future and its ability to contest upcoming elections. With the 10‑day ultimatum, the PDP is under pressure to resolve its internal issues and establish a clear leadership structure, a step that will be crucial in determining its role in Nigerian politics.
