Guinea-Bissau: Goodluck Jonathan meets Tinubu

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan met with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Saturday. The meeting followed Jonathan’s return from Guinea‑Bissau, where he had been leading an election‑monitoring mission as head of the West African Elders Forum Election Observation Mission. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga confirmed Jonathan’s visit to the Villa, posting about the meeting on social media.

Jonathan had traveled to Guinea‑Bissau to observe the country’s presidential and legislative elections, which took place last Sunday. However, his team’s work was disrupted by a military takeover, raising concerns about his safety. He was evacuated from Bissau on an Ivorian government aircraft and arrived back in Nigeria on Thursday evening, landing at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. A video of his arrival showed him stepping off the plane surrounded by supporters and officials.

The military takeover in Guinea‑Bissau occurred while Jonathan’s team was still carrying out its election‑monitoring assignment, heightening worries about his security given his high‑profile regional role. The Saturday meeting with President Tinubu likely provided an opportunity for the two leaders to discuss the situation in Guinea‑Bissau and Jonathan’s experiences there.

The encounter is significant amid the West African region’s recent political instability. Neighboring countries and international organizations are closely watching the developments in Guinea‑Bissau. Jonathan’s status as a respected elder statesman and his experience in election monitoring make his insights valuable for understanding the on‑ground realities. Although the outcome of the meeting has not been disclosed, it is probable that the leaders discussed ways to promote stability and democracy in the region. As events in Guinea‑Bissau continue to unfold, the international community will be monitoring developments and potential next steps.
