The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent ambassadorial nominations, describing the list as a political reward scheme rather than a genuine effort to strengthen Nigeria’s foreign relations. In a statement, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, voiced particular concern over the nomination of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The ADC argues that Yakubu’s appointment raises ethical questions and undermines the credibility of an electoral body still recovering from the disputed 2023 election. Yakubu supervised that election, which produced President Tinubu, and his involvement has sparked allegations of bias that eroded public trust in INEC. The party deems the nomination ill‑timed and damaging, suggesting it lends credence to claims that Yakubu was not a neutral umpire during the vote.
According to the ADC, Nigeria needs a credible diplomatic corps to rebuild its international reputation, but the current slate of nominees falls short of that goal. Most of the candidates are former diplomats, political supporters, or relatives of political associates, and the inclusion of Yakubu appears incongruous. While no law bars Yakubu from serving as an ambassador, the party stresses the importance of upholding ethical standards to protect the integrity of future elections and the democratic process.
The ADC urges Yakubu to decline the nomination in order to preserve his legacy and maintain INEC’s institutional credibility. If he refuses, the party calls on the Senate to reject his appointment, emphasizing the need to safeguard public trust in the electoral system. The controversy highlights ongoing challenges within Nigeria’s electoral framework and underscores the demand for greater transparency and accountability in foreign‑policy appointments.
As the Senate prepares to review the nominations, the outcome will be closely watched both domestically and internationally. Observers will assess whether the government can address the concerns raised by the ADC and other stakeholders and demonstrate a genuine commitment to improving Nigeria’s international reputation.
