Adebayo Olugbenga Adedamola, popularly known as FRYO, has been declared the winner of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) primary election for the Osun State governorship, which is scheduled for August 8, 2026. The primary was held in Osogbo on Tuesday under a significant security presence. According to Humphrey Abba, chairman of the primary election committee, Adebayo secured 919 votes out of 957 accredited ballots, achieving a clear victory. Abba noted that 20 votes were void following the withdrawal of one candidate, believed to be Governor Ademola Adeleke.
Although Adeleke announced his resignation from the party, his name still appeared on the PDP governorship primary ballot. He submitted a resignation letter dated November 4, 2025, addressed to the PDP leadership in his ward, raising questions about the party’s leadership and the potential impact on the upcoming election. Party officials affirmed that the primary was conducted in accordance with established guidelines, with accredited delegates participating, and that the process was fair and transparent.
Earlier, Osun PDP chairman Sunday Bisi had announced that the governorship primary would be postponed due to a national‑level leadership crisis. Nevertheless, a faction of the party proceeded with the exercise as planned. With Adebayo’s victory, the PDP now has a candidate for the August 2026 election, a development that will shape the state’s political landscape and the party’s prospects. As the election approaches, the PDP will seek to build on Adebayo’s momentum in the coming months.
