Putin hosts 'constructive' talks with US envoys as Trump makes new push for Ukraine peace deal

Russian President Vladimir Putin met with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, son‑in‑law of former President Donald Trump, at the Kremlin on Tuesday. The meeting is part of the Trump administration’s effort to broker a peace deal in the four‑year‑old Ukraine conflict. Both sides agreed to keep the discussion’s details confidential. According to Yuri Ushakov, Putin’s foreign‑policy advisor, the talks were “very useful, constructive, and highly substantive,” lasting five hours and allowing an in‑depth exploration of prospects for joint efforts toward a long‑term peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian crisis. Ushakov’s statement suggests the meeting was productive and laid groundwork for future cooperation.

The Kremlin gathering follows recent talks between U.S. officials and a Ukrainian delegation in Florida, which Secretary of State Marco Rubio described as “productive” while noting that more work remains. A U.S.–backed peace plan released last month sparked concerns that it favored Moscow, proposing concessions such as Ukraine ceding the Donbas region to Russia and abandoning its bid to join NATO. Negotiators have said the framework has been revised, but the specifics remain unclear.

In a separate development, the Kremlin released a video it claims shows Russian troops waving a flag in the Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk. The video’s authenticity has not been verified, and Ukrainian officials have not commented. However, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Monday that fighting was still ongoing in the area. Pokrovsk is a strategic location along the eastern front line, situated within the “fortress belt” of Donetsk, which is crucial to Ukraine’s regional defense.

The meeting between Putin and the U.S. delegation underscores ongoing attempts to find a peaceful solution to the Ukraine conflict. As the situation evolves, the international community will be watching closely for updates on the peace talks and the conflict’s outcome.
