President Bola Tinubu has sworn in five new Permanent Secretaries to fill existing vacancies in the federal civil service. The ceremony took place at the State House in Abuja, just before the Federal Executive Council meeting that the President presided over. The oath of office was administered by the President, formalizing the entry of the appointees into their respective roles.
The newly appointed Permanent Secretaries are Alhaji Abdulkarim Ibrahim, representing the North Central region; Dr. John Ezeamama and Dr. Abdul Sule Garba from the North West; Dr. Ishiyaku Mohammed from the North East; and Dr. Ukaire Binyerem Chigbowu from the South East. In addition, President Tinubu swore in Aminu Yusuf as Chairman of the National Population Commission, along with two other commissioners.
A moment of silence was observed in honor of former Minister of Foreign Affairs Amb. Joy Ogwu, who died on October 13 at the age of 79. The appointment of new Permanent Secretaries is part of the federal government’s effort to fill key positions and ensure the smooth operation of the civil service. The Federal Executive Council, which the President chairs, advises the government on major policy decisions and oversees the implementation of national programmes.
The new appointees are expected to play crucial roles in shaping and implementing policies in their respective regions and ministries. The National Population Commission, now led by Aminu Yusuf, is responsible for conducting censuses and other demographic surveys that provide critical data for national development planning. Its work informs policy decisions on healthcare, education, infrastructure, urbanisation, and migration patterns.
The swearing‑in ceremony marks an important step in strengthening administrative capacity and ensuring effective governance. As they assume their duties, the new officials will be expected to collaborate closely with other government agencies and stakeholders to address development challenges and promote national growth.
