IGP approves creation of 2 area commands, 5 divisions in Benue — Daily Nigerian

The Inspector General of Police’s monitoring unit has arrived in Anambra to oversee the withdrawal of police personnel from VIP escort duties. According to Police Public Relations Officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, received the team on Monday in Awka. This move forms part of a nationwide effort to reform police operations and enhance national security after recent attacks on places of worship and schools across the country.

The Commissioner reiterated the command’s commitment to supporting the Inspector General’s reform agenda, which aims to promote professionalism, discipline, and optimal deployment of police manpower. Removing officers from VIP escort duties is expected to strengthen public policing, improve response capacity, and make more personnel available for core policing duties throughout the state.

To ensure a seamless and transparent enforcement process, the command has pledged to support the monitoring team with additional personnel. All Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Heads of Tactical Units in the state have been directed to provide the necessary assistance. The command also urged individuals, organizations, and VIPs affected by the directive to comply fully.

The directive, issued recently by Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, cites the need to reform police operations and improve national security. Its implementation is seen as a significant step toward enhancing the police force’s effectiveness and addressing growing security concerns. With the monitoring unit’s presence in Anambra, the state police command is poised to enforce the directive and contribute to the broader effort to improve national security.

Successful implementation will free up more personnel for core policing duties and strengthen the country’s overall security architecture. As Anambra’s police command enforces the directive, it is expected that other states will follow suit, leading to a more streamlined and effective policing system nationwide.
