AGN Election: Rita Daniels Loses Presidency

The Actors Guild of Nigeria has elected a new president, with Abubakar Yakubu emerging as the winner in a closely contested election. The vote took place on Saturday during the Guild’s annual general meeting in Benin, Edo State. Yakubu, the outgoing National Secretary, secured 116 votes to defeat Rita Daniels, who garnered 113 votes. Three ballots were declared void.

Rita Daniels, the mother of actress Regina Daniels, had been vying for the top position in the Guild. Her bid was notable, given her background and experience in the Nigerian entertainment industry. However, Yakubu’s victory marks a significant milestone, as he becomes the first actor from Northern Nigeria to lead the Actors Guild since its establishment in the 1990s.

The election outcome comes after a period of controversy surrounding Rita Daniels’ candidacy. Emeka Rollas, the outgoing president, had recently expressed concerns about Regina Daniels’ well-being, suggesting that her mother should prioritize her daughter’s needs over her political ambitions. Despite this, Rita Daniels proceeded with her campaign, ultimately falling short of the required votes.

Yakubu’s win is seen as a significant development in the Nigerian entertainment industry, given the Guild’s influence on the country’s film and theater sectors. As the new president, he is expected to play a key role in shaping the industry’s future and addressing the challenges faced by actors and other stakeholders.

The Actors Guild of Nigeria has been a pivotal organization in promoting the interests of actors and advancing the Nigerian entertainment industry. With Yakubu at the helm, the Guild is likely to undergo significant changes, and his leadership will be closely watched by industry stakeholders and observers. As the Nigerian entertainment industry continues to evolve, the Guild’s new leadership will be crucial in navigating the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
