Jake Epelle, founder of TAF Africa, described the political situation in Rivers State as “disgraceful” during a recent interview on Channels Television’s *The Morning Brief*. His remarks come amid the defection of Speaker Martin Amaewhule and 15 other members of the Rivers State House of Assembly from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This shift has raised fears of a new crisis, coming barely three months after a peace agreement was brokered between Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike and Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Epelle condemned the lawmakers’ actions, saying they have mocked the Supreme Court judgment that ruled against their defection. He called the episode an “aberration of democracy” and a manifestation of “dirty politics” that will ultimately harm ordinary citizens. Urging the President to intervene, Epelle warned that, if left unchecked, the situation could spiral into another state of emergency.
The defections have significant implications for Rivers State’s political landscape, underscoring the need for stability and adherence to democratic principles. The ongoing instability is being closely monitored, and the President’s response will be crucial in shaping the next steps. Given the state’s history of political crises, authorities must take proactive measures to prevent further turmoil and safeguard the well‑being of the people.
