Residential fire in South China kills 12 people

A devastating fire in a residential building in southern China has resulted in the loss of 12 lives, according to state media reports on Wednesday. The blaze occurred in a four-storey building in Shantou, Guangdong province, and was reported to have started at approximately 9:20 pm on Tuesday. The local fire department successfully extinguished the fire by 10:00 pm. The building, a self-built reinforced concrete structure, had an area of 150 square meters affected by the fire. Initial reports on Wednesday morning indicated that eight people had lost their lives, with four injured individuals taken to the hospital. However, state media outlet Xinhua later confirmed that the total number of fatalities had risen to 12. This incident comes on the heels of a massive fire that engulfed several high-rise residential towers in neighboring Hong Kong last month, resulting in the loss of 160 lives. In response to the Hong Kong tragedy, China launched a campaign to address fire hazards in high-rise buildings. The recent fire in Shantou highlights the ongoing need for vigilance and improved safety measures in residential buildings. The Chaonan District Fire and Rescue Team has initiated an investigation into the cause of the fire and is conducting aftermath handling work in an orderly manner. The authorities have not yet released any information on the potential cause of the fire. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of fire safety and the need for regular inspections and maintenance of fire prevention systems in residential buildings. As China continues to urbanize and expand its infrastructure, ensuring the safety of its citizens remains a top priority. The government’s campaign to address fire hazards in high-rise buildings is a crucial step towards preventing such tragedies in the future.
