The All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged victorious in the local government elections held in Borno State, Nigeria, winning every chairmanship and councilorship position across the state’s 27 Local Government Areas. Dr. Tahir Shettima, Chairman of the Borno State Independent Electoral Commission (BOSEC), reported that the elections were conducted peacefully and in accordance with the Electoral Act 2022.

Dr. Shettima praised the participating political parties, security agencies, civil society organizations, journalists, and the Inter‑Party Advisory Council of Borno State for their roles in ensuring the elections’ success. He also thanked Governor Babagana Umara Zulum for his commitment to deepening democracy at the local level by providing the necessary resources for the polls.

The voting process was marked by a calm atmosphere. While casting his ballot in his hometown of Mafa on Saturday, Governor Zulum predicted an APC victory, emphasizing that Borno is an APC state and that no other party would claim victory, even in the 2027 general elections.

The newly elected chairmen and councillors are expected to be sworn in at a later date. Dr. Shettima urged them to provide quality representation and deliver the dividends of democracy to people at the grassroots. The outcome reinforces the APC’s strong presence in Borno State and positions the party to maintain its dominance in the region.

These local government elections represent a significant development in Nigeria’s democratic process. As the newly elected officials prepare to take office, they will be expected to address the pressing needs of their constituents and deliver effective governance at the local level. With the elections concluded, attention now turns to the inauguration of the new chairmen and councillors, marking the beginning of a new era in local governance in Borno State.
