Buhari biography reveals reasons for not naming successor due to security concerns

A new biography on former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has shed light on his decision not to publicly endorse a successor ahead of the 2023 All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary. The book, “From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari,” reveals that Buhari’s choice was driven by security concerns and a desire to maintain unity within the ruling party.

According to the book’s author, Dr. Charles Omole, Buhari’s decision was influenced by the potential risks associated with publicly backing a candidate. Former Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS) Yusuf Bichi elaborated on this point, stating that Buhari deliberately avoided endorsing any aspirant to prevent putting their life at risk and exacerbating divisions within the APC.

Bichi explained that Buhari’s silence on the matter was often misinterpreted as indifference, but it was actually a calculated security decision based on intelligence reports at the time. He noted that the political climate was tense, with “knives out” and a real risk of violence. By not endorsing a candidate, Buhari aimed to shield the individual from potential harm and preserve a fragile equilibrium within the party.

The biography also touches on Buhari’s decision not to reverse the removal of Lawal Daura as DSS Director General, which was made by then-Acting President Yemi Osinbajo while Buhari was abroad on medical leave. Bichi stated that Buhari believed overturning the decision would undermine Osinbajo’s authority and damage institutional stability.

Buhari’s approach to governance is characterized as disciplined and evidence-based, with a focus on professionalism and restraint. He consistently asked security chiefs for proof before taking action, refusing to act on rumors or unverified claims. This approach allowed security agencies to operate professionally while remaining accountable, reinforcing Buhari’s belief that public office is a trust, not a personal privilege.

The book’s presentation at the Presidential Villa was attended by President Tinubu, Gambian President Adama Barrow, and other dignitaries. The biography provides valuable insights into Buhari’s leadership style and decision-making process, highlighting his commitment to stability, security, and institutional integrity. As Nigeria continues to navigate its complex political landscape, Buhari’s legacy serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible leadership and careful consideration in the face of challenging circumstances.
