Nollywood actress Yvonne Jegede has voiced her perspective that marriage is often overvalued. In a recent interview with Naija FM Lagos, the 42‑year‑old star said she is open to remarriage if it happens, but she is not actively seeking it, adding, “I have learned not to say ‘never.’”
Jegede’s comments stem from personal experience. Her marriage to colleague Olakunle Abounce Fawole ended in 2019 after less than a year, with financial imbalance and her ex‑husband’s inability to handle or respect her cited as key reasons for the split. In an earlier interview, she revealed that she was the primary provider in the relationship and expressed regret for prioritising love over financial stability.
She also observes that many couples who date for long periods often break up shortly after marrying, suggesting that the added pressure and intolerance that come with marriage can be detrimental. As an alternative, Jegede proposes that cohabitation without the formal marriage label may be a more viable option for some couples.
Her remarks highlight the complexities and challenges associated with marriage, especially within Nigerian society. By sharing her experiences and observations, Jegede underscores that every relationship is unique and what works for one couple may not work for another. As a public figure, her views are likely to resonate with fans and spark further discussion about the nature of marriage and relationships in modern society.
