Fela set to become first African to receive Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award

The Recording Academy has announced that the late Fela Anikulapo‑Kuti, a pioneering figure in Afrobeat music, will be posthumously honored with a Special Merit Lifetime Achievement Award at the 67th Grammy Awards. This distinction makes him the first African musician to receive the prestigious honor. The Academy has recognized Fela as the “architect of Afrobeat,” highlighting his profound impact on the genre and his lasting influence on successive generations of artists.

Fela Anikulapo‑Kuti will be celebrated alongside other renowned international artists, including Whitney Houston, Paul Simon, Cher, and Chaka Khan.
