The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has signaled its willingness to give Abia State Governor Alex Otti its governorship ticket for the 2027 election should he choose to leave his current party. Senator Adolphus Wabara, chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, made the remark while discussing the governor’s political future and the party’s strategy ahead of the next general elections.
Wabara described Governor Otti as a “formidable political actor” whose performance has earned respect across party lines. He cited Otti’s achievements in office as a key factor behind his appeal to several political parties, noting that effective leadership and tangible results now outweigh party affiliation. The PDP is currently undergoing a repositioning process aimed at rebuilding trust and strengthening the party before the 2027 elections. According to Wabara, the national leadership is focused on restructuring and presenting a more credible, attractive platform for aspirants.
Emphasizing that the South‑East remains a PDP stronghold, Wabara said Otti’s possible defection would significantly boost the party’s influence in the region. He commended the Abia 25‑Year Development Plan, calling it a strategic blueprint capable of transforming the state if effectively implemented. He praised Governor Otti’s strides in infrastructure, healthcare, education, industrial development, security, and the introduction of electric buses for urban transport.
The PDP chairman urged Governor Otti to consider joining the party, citing leadership challenges within the Labour Party. He argued that the PDP offers a stronger national structure and wider reach, which would be crucial in withstanding pressure from the ruling party ahead of the 2027 polls. With the next general elections approaching, the PDP’s offer to Governor Otti appears to be a strategic move to reinforce the party’s position in the South‑East.
