Gov Yusuf backs state police, says it will improve security nationwide

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf voiced his support for the creation of state police, describing it as a vital solution to Nigeria’s security challenges. He made the remarks at the graduation ceremony for 2,000 members of the Kano State Neighbourhood Watch Corps, held at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano. Yusuf stressed that peace and stability require a blend of strong security measures, job creation and economic opportunities, noting that idle, unemployed youths are more likely to turn to crime.

The governor believes state police would complement existing security agencies and make it easier to tackle insecurity nationwide. The graduation of the 2,000 corps members marks a significant step toward strengthening community‑based security in Kano State. The operatives—1,870 men and 130 women—have completed their training and are equipped to confront major security challenges across the state’s 44 local government areas. They will be provided with 88 Hilux patrol vehicles and 440 motorcycles to ensure rapid response and effective mobility.

Yusuf emphasized that decentralising policing enables states to react more effectively to threats, as they are more familiar with local environments, cultures and challenges. Properly organised and regulated state police, he said, will enhance grassroots security and support federal agencies in maintaining law and order. While praising existing security forces for their efforts, the governor highlighted the importance of involving community‑based groups that understand the local terrain.

He urged corps members to perform their duties with discipline, professionalism and respect for human rights, working in harmony with other security agencies. The launch of the Kano State Neighbourhood Watch Corps represents a major development in the state’s security strategy. By collaborating closely with conventional security forces, Yusuf is confident that peace and order will be maintained in both urban and rural areas of Kano. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to continued investment in security, stressing that peace and stability are essential for economic growth and social development in the state.
