Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, has urged residents and visitors to keep the environment clean, healthy and safe during the Christmas and New Year celebrations. In a statement released on Wednesday, he stressed the importance of proper waste management, advising people to store waste in covered containers for collection by authorized waste operators.
To support effective waste management, all Private Sector Participants (PSP) operators have been mandated to work around the clock throughout the festive period to collect waste in their assigned areas. Government waste‑management equipment and environmental officials have also been deployed across the state to assist the PSP operators in maintaining cleanliness.
Oresanya further advised traders to conduct their businesses in a clean and safe manner, especially given the surge in trading activities in markets and supermarkets. He warned against street trading, noting that environmental marshals will enforce order in public areas. “Emergency traders” who display goods on roadsides or other public spaces are instructed to relocate to nearby markets; otherwise, the state government will seize their goods and impose community service for violating environmental laws.
To ensure a safe and enjoyable festive season, the commissioner urged drivers to exercise caution while driving, as street sweepers will be active in keeping the roads clean. He also reminded carnival organizers that blocking state roads is prohibited by environmental laws.
These measures form part of the Ogun State government’s broader effort to promote public health and safety during a period expected to see increased waste generation and trading activity. By working together with residents, visitors and traders, the government hopes to ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration for all.
