2027: Buhari's man, Farouk Aliyu speaks on CPC bloc dumping APC

A prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Farouk Aliyu, has urged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to resolve its internal crisis or consider merging with the African Democratic Congress (ADC). In a recent television interview, Aliyu emphasized that unity and concessions within the PDP are essential for the party’s survival and for the health of Nigeria’s democracy. He suggested that a merger between the PDP and ADC could revitalize the opposition and strengthen democratic governance, noting that vibrant opposition parties are crucial for holding the government accountable.

Aliyu reminded listeners that the APC itself was created through a merger of several parties, including the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), and Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). His comments come amid ongoing leadership crises within the PDP and the recent defection of several key members—governors and National Assembly legislators—to the APC. He stressed that it is not the APC’s responsibility to unite opposition parties; rather, respected political actors within the PDP and ADC must take steps to reposition themselves.

The APC chieftain also asserted that the ruling party is not intimidated by the opposition, emphasizing that Nigeria belongs to all its citizens, regardless of political affiliation. His remarks underscore the importance of a strong opposition in ensuring democratic governance and accountability. The PDP’s internal challenges have led to a decline in its fortunes, and its ability to address these issues and reposition itself will be crucial for its future role in Nigeria’s political landscape. As the country’s political environment continues to evolve, the actions of the PDP and other opposition parties will be closely watched, with many awaiting their next moves.
