China will launch an “action plan” for its digital currency on January 1, according to a deputy governor of the People’s Bank of China (PBoC). The plan is designed to improve the management and operation of the digital yuan, a modern payment and circulation tool within the financial system. Known as the e‑CNY, the digital yuan has been under development since 2014, with the PBoC conducting pilot programs to test its use.
The upcoming plan will introduce a new generation of arrangements, including a measurement framework, a management system, an operating mechanism, and an ecosystem. A key feature is that banks will pay interest on digital yuan balances held by clients, encouraging broader adoption of the currency. The PBoC also proposes establishing an international digital yuan operations centre in Shanghai, a major financial hub in eastern China.
This initiative reflects a broader global trend of monetary authorities exploring digital currencies, driven by the surge in online payments during the pandemic and the growing popularity of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin.
