Chinese automaker BYD is poised to overtake Tesla as the world’s largest electric‑vehicle seller in annual sales. By the end of November, BYD had already sold 2.07 million electric vehicles, while Tesla’s cumulative sales reached 1.22 million by the end of September. Tesla’s total for the year is expected to be about 1.65 million, after a projected decline to 449 000 units in the upcoming quarter.

The drop in Tesla’s sales is largely due to the expiration of the U.S. electric‑vehicle tax credit in September 2025. A surge in purchases occurred in the preceding quarter as buyers rushed to claim the credit, but that boost is unlikely to continue. Deutsche Bank forecasts that Tesla’s sales will fall by roughly one‑third in North America and Europe and by one‑tenth in China. The loss of the U.S. credit creates a transition period for the domestic market, with demand taking time to settle at a new equilibrium. Additionally, Tesla has faced headwinds in key markets because of CEO Elon Musk’s political affiliations and growing competition from Chinese firms such as BYD and European manufacturers.

BYD, despite its rapid growth, confronts challenges of its own. Profitability in its home market is pressured by price‑sensitive consumers, prompting the company to expand abroad. It is building overseas production capacity and supply chains to navigate a complex global tariff environment, a strategy that should help smooth earnings.

Tesla, meanwhile, remains positioned for potential growth through its autonomous‑driving technology. Advances in its “full self‑driving” system could lift sales, and the company plans to start producing its autonomous robotaxi, the Cybercab, in April 2026. Lower‑priced versions of the Model 3 and Model Y have also been unveiled, which may further boost demand.

As the electric‑vehicle market evolves, competition between BYD and Tesla is set to intensify. With BYD likely to surpass Tesla in 2025 sales, the American firm will need to adapt to shifting market conditions and capitalize on its technological innovations to stay competitive. The outcome of this rivalry will shape the future of the electric‑vehicle industry, with both companies playing pivotal roles.
