The Gombe State government has created two new commissions—the Gombe State Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Gombe State Information Technology and Digital Economy Commission—to oversee the state’s electricity and digital economy sectors. Governor Inuwa Yahaya appointed Dr. Usman Abba Arabi, spokesperson of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, as chairman of the Electricity Regulatory Commission, and Dr. Al‑Amin Umar Barambu as chairman of the Digital Economy Commission. The appointments were announced by Secretary to the State Government Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi after the governor gave assent to the bills establishing the commissions.
The Gombe State Electricity Regulatory Commission will focus on leveraging the Electricity Act to improve service delivery, attract private‑sector investment and expand access to reliable electricity. Meanwhile, the Gombe State Information Technology and Digital Economy Commission will aim to build a technology‑driven, digitally competitive economy, emphasizing ICT development, digital innovation, skills acquisition, e‑governance and youth employment.
Governor Yahaya said the appointees possess the experience and expertise needed to fulfill the commissions’ mandates. He urged them to apply professionalism, integrity and dedication in building strong, responsive, results‑oriented institutions that deliver tangible benefits to the people of Gombe State. The establishment of these commissions forms part of the state’s broader effort to reform the power sector and promote economic development, with reliable electricity and a thriving digital economy identified as key priorities.
The chairmen’s appointments will take effect on 2 January 2026. By creating these regulatory bodies, the Gombe State government is taking a significant step toward a more regulated and competitive electricity and digital economy sector, which is expected to boost the state’s economy and improve the lives of its citizens.
