Plateau PDP Experiences Mass Defection to APC

The Plateau State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is undergoing a significant exodus of top officials to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This wave of defections follows Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s announced switch to the APC, which was confirmed by the party’s National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, on 17 December 2025. In the wake of the governor’s move, several commissioners, local government chairmen and senior aides have resigned from the PDP and joined the APC.

Among those who have left is the Commissioner for Water Resources and Energy, Hon. Bashir Lawandi Datti, who submitted his resignation to the Abba Na Shehu Ward chairman of the PDP in Jos North LGA. Datti said his decision was the result of careful consideration and extensive consultations. Other defectors include Hon. Ibrahim Musa Ashoms, representing Jos East LGA, and Dr. Nicholas Baamlong, the Commissioner for Health. Hon. Ephraim Usman, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, also tendered his resignation, citing personal interest and the welfare of the people of Kanam LGA.

In addition to the commissioners, several council chairmen have quit the party. These include Hon. Amalau Samuel Amalau, Chairman of Bokkos Local Government Area, and John Christopher, Chairman of Jos North Local Government Council. Governor Mutfwang’s liaison officer, Hon. Nura Shehu, resigned from his appointment, invoking personal conviction and unwavering principles.

Governor Mutfwang formally defected from the PDP to the APC in a letter dated 29 December 2025, announcing his resignation from the party. Many of his appointees are expected to follow his lead and join the ruling party. The mass defection represents a major blow to the PDP in Plateau State and is likely to reshape the state’s political landscape. The governor’s decision to seek an alternative platform was framed as a move toward purposeful leadership, clearer direction and improved service delivery, leaving the PDP to grapple with the loss of its top officials.
