Congo Conflict Escalates in Eastern Region

Renewed clashes have erupted in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, with fresh fighting reported around the city of Uvira in South Kivu province. The latest violence involves the Congolese army, supported by Wazalendo fighters, and AFC/M23 rebels allied with the Twirwaneho group, which according to United Nations reports, are backed by Rwanda.

The conflict broke out on Saturday in several localities approximately ten kilometers south of Uvira, with fighting reported in Kigongo and surrounding areas. Witnesses described hearing heavy weapons fire in highland areas and, at times, in residential neighborhoods. The sound of gunfire and explosions was also reported inside Uvira, prompting residents from nearby localities to flee towards the city.

As the situation continues to deteriorate, displaced families are seeking shelter in churches and public buildings, facing difficult conditions due to limited access to clean water and basic services. Civil society organizations are warning of a worsening humanitarian crisis as the number of displaced individuals increases. The influx of displaced persons is straining the city’s resources, exacerbating the need for urgent humanitarian assistance.

Local civil society leaders are calling on all parties to respect existing agreements and implement an immediate ceasefire. They emphasize the need to halt the fighting, protect civilians, and allow communities to return safely to their homes. The leaders are also urging the international community to take notice of the deteriorating situation and provide support to alleviate the suffering of the affected populations.

The conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is a long-standing issue, with various armed groups vying for control of the region. The recent escalation of violence has raised concerns about the stability of the region and the potential for further humanitarian crises. As the situation continues to unfold, it is essential to monitor developments and provide support to those affected by the conflict. The international community must work together to promote a peaceful resolution and ensure the protection of civilians in the region.
