Sheikh Gumi denies claim that US targeted him in Nigeria

Renowned Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has denied a recent report that claimed he said the United States targeted him in an attack on Nigerian soil. In a statement posted on his verified Facebook page, Gumi called the report “entirely false,” emphasizing that he never made such a claim and does not believe it to be possible.

The confusion appears to stem from a lecture Gumi delivered at a mosque, where he discussed a past security threat linked to the extremist group Boko Haram. He recounted an incident from August 2012 in which he was warned that Boko Haram planned to kill him. The plot failed when the attackers were killed after a bomb they were carrying exploded near his house. Gumi clarified that he now lives with his family in safety and peace, without fear or intimidation.

He urged media organizations that published the false story to correct it and apologize to the public for spreading misinformation. The denial is significant given the potential implications such a claim could have on international relations and national security in Nigeria. Sheikh Ahmad Gumi is a prominent figure known for negotiating with militant groups, including Boko Haram, and his efforts to promote peace and stability have attracted both praise and criticism.

This episode underscores the importance of verifying information through credible sources to avoid the spread of falsehoods, especially in sensitive matters involving international relations and national security. As the situation develops, media outlets are expected to take the necessary steps to correct the report and provide clarity to their audiences. Gumi’s denial aims to reassure the public of his safety and to mitigate any fallout from the dissemination of inaccurate information.
