The death of Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North, has prompted an outpouring of tributes from Nigerian leaders. Former Nasarawa State governor Umaru Al‑Makura said the senator had been bedridden for more than two years, which prevented him from performing his duties in the 10th National Assembly. Despite his health challenges, Al‑Makura noted that Akwashiki played a significant role in the success of his two terms as governor. He described the senator’s death as a colossal loss to his constituents, to Nasarawa State, and to Nigeria as a whole, emphasizing Akwashiki’s exemplary commitment, loyalty to his leaders and dedication to his followers.
Akwashiki’s remains arrived in Nigeria from India and were received at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport cargo terminal in Abuja by a delegation that included Al‑Makura, former Social Democratic Party presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo, and SDP National Chairman Prof. Sadiq Gombe. The late senator’s passing has also been mourned by other leaders, such as senatorial aspirant Duba Dodo, who called the death unfortunate for the people of Nasarawa State and Nigerians, and Safiyanu Isa Andaha, Chairman of Akwaga Local Government and the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, Nasarawa Chapter, who acknowledged the impact of the loss on both the state and the nation.
Senator Akwashiki’s death serves as a reminder of his significant contributions to Nigerian politics and the void his absence creates in the country’s legislative landscape. As Nigeria continues to mourn, his legacy as a dedicated public servant and loyal politician is expected to endure. The impact of his death will likely be felt in upcoming legislative sessions, and his constituents will watch closely to see how his successor fills the gap left by his passing. With his steadfast commitment to public service, Senator Akwashiki’s memory will continue to be honored by leaders and citizens alike.
