Elon Musk accuses UK of censorship over Grok AI chatbot ban

Elon Musk has accused the UK government of suppressing free speech after officials threatened to ban Grok, the AI chatbot on his X platform, over concerns it generates non-consensual erotic deepfake images of women and children. The British communications watchdog, Ofcom, is investigating Grok’s ability to produce sexualized images derived from photos of real people. UK Technology Secretary Liz Kendall has stated she would support Ofcom if it decides to block nationwide access to the chatbot.

The controversy surrounding Grok’s image generation capabilities has sparked a heated debate about free speech and censorship. Musk has been feuding with British officials for months, accusing them of censorship and arrests over social media posts. The tech billionaire has long been critical of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, whom he accuses of mishandling the grooming gang scandal and suppressing free speech.

The issue gained momentum after a user pointed out that other AI chatbots, such as Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT, can also generate deepfake images of people in bikinis when prompted. In response, Musk claimed that the UK government’s actions are an attempt to suppress free speech. X has since limited Grok’s image generation and editing tools to paying subscribers and warned that users creating illegal content will face legal consequences.

The feud between Musk and Starmer has been ongoing, with the tech billionaire accusing the UK prime minister of arresting people over social media posts amid a government crackdown following anti-immigration riots last year. The unrest was sparked by a mass stabbing in Southport and the sexual assault of a young girl by a migrant. Musk has also criticized Starmer’s handling of the grooming gang scandal, in which groups of mostly Pakistani men systematically raped thousands of vulnerable young British girls over two decades.

The UK government’s actions against Grok have significant implications for the debate on free speech and censorship. As the investigation into Grok’s capabilities continues, it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold. The EU has also confronted X over Grok’s pedophilic content, adding to the growing scrutiny of the AI chatbot. With the UK government considering a ban on Grok, the issue is likely to remain a contentious topic in the coming weeks.
