Kaduna State has witnessed a significant increase in water supply over the past month, thanks to Governor Uba Sani’s substantial investment in the water sector. According to the Commissioner of Public Works and Infrastructure, Arc Ibrahim Hamza, areas such as Tudun Wada, Malali, and Unguwan Dosa have seen a notable improvement in water supply since December.
The rehabilitation of the Malali Water Works has played a crucial role in enhancing water supply in Kaduna metropolis. The Commissioner noted that the Makera Water Treatment Plant’s rehabilitation will further boost water supply once completed. Residents in areas that had not received water in seven years are now enjoying a steady supply, courtesy of the Kaduna State Water Corporation (KADSWAC).
Both the 150 MLD and 10 MLD Zaria Water Works are fully operational, providing residents with a steady water supply. Major repairs have also been made at the Kafanchan Water Treatment plant, resulting in improved water supply in the town and surrounding local government areas. The Commissioner emphasized that once all water treatment plants are functional, boreholes will become redundant, and residents will no longer need them.
Governor Uba Sani’s declaration of a state of emergency in the water sector in 2023 led to significant investment, clearance of salary arrears, and the appointment of a new Managing Director for KADSWAC. The state plans to spend N93 billion over four years to rehabilitate the water sector, addressing the neglect of the past 11 years. The first tranche of funding has already been utilized to pay outstanding salaries and wages of KADSWAC staff, settle electricity bills, and appoint a new Managing Director with three decades of experience in the water sector.
The Kaduna State government has also invested heavily in the rehabilitation and retrofitting of water treatment plants and distribution mains, with a focus on sanitation and hygiene. The Commissioner urged residents to pay their water bills promptly and advised KADSWAC staff to be diligent in their duties. As the state continues to work towards improving its water supply, residents can expect to see further enhancements in the coming months. With the ongoing efforts to revamp the water sector, Kaduna State is taking significant steps towards providing its residents with access to clean and reliable water.
