Impeachment of Governor Fubara stalls as lawmakers appeal for leniency

Lawmakers in Rivers State have called for a more lenient approach regarding the planned impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Nma Odu. The appeal was made by House Majority Leader Sylvanus Nwankwo and lawmaker Peter Abbey from Degema during a joint press briefing in Port Harcourt. Nwankwo urged his colleagues to balance justice with mercy, citing interventions from various leaders, residents, and constituents, and requested that the impeachment process be halted.

The lawmakers noted that while they initially unanimously supported the impeachment notice, subsequent interventions have led them to appeal for leniency and dialogue to resolve differences. According to Nwankwo, “We unanimously issued the notice, but following interventions, we appeal for leniency and dialogue to resolve differences and halt impeachment.” Abbey also advocated for peace, suggesting that discontinuing the impeachment process would strengthen the prospects for amicable governance and give the governor and his deputy an opportunity to adhere strictly to the rule of law.

It is worth noting that both Nwankwo and Abbey were among the 26 lawmakers who initially endorsed the impeachment notice against Fubara and his deputy, citing constitutional infractions. However, their recent appeal suggests a shift towards seeking a more conciliatory approach to address the issues at hand. The development highlights the complexities of governance and the need for balance between upholding the law and promoting stability.

The situation in Rivers State is being closely watched, given the implications of the impeachment process for the state’s governance and political stability. As the lawmakers reconsider their stance, it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold. The appeal for leniency and dialogue may provide an opportunity for resolving the issues amicably, potentially paving the way for improved governance in the state.
