Lagos Ferry to Launch Electric Boats for Cheaper Transport

The Lagos State Government is introducing electric-powered boats to its Lagos Ferry Services, LAGFERRY, by the end of the year. This move aims to reduce transport fares and promote sustainable mobility. According to LAGFERRY’s Managing Director, Abdoulbaq Ladi-Balogun, the introduction of electric vessels will provide a more affordable, environmentally friendly, and efficient water transport system.

The electric boats are expected to ease the burden of rising transportation costs and persistent traffic congestion in the state. Ladi-Balogun explained that electric boats are cheaper to operate and maintain compared to conventional vessels, which will translate into more affordable fares for commuters. This initiative aligns with the state government’s transport and climate objectives, making it both an economic necessity and an environmentally responsible step.

The introduction of electric-powered boats is part of the state government’s commitment to providing affordable, sustainable, and eco-friendly public transportation for residents. LAGFERRY has experienced steady growth in patronage since its operations began on February 4, 2020, transporting approximately 4.4 million passengers. This trend has been described as the emergence of a “Watermania lifestyle,” where commuters increasingly rely on ferries for daily movement, parking their vehicles at jetties.

During the 2025 Detty December festivities, LAGFERRY saw a surge in demand, with the number of daily trips increasing tenfold as residents and visitors used ferries to access beach houses and coastal resorts across Lagos. The growing acceptance of water transportation among Lagos residents has led to an increase in demand for ferry services.

The introduction of electric-powered boats is expected to further boost the popularity of water transportation in the state. With the reduced operating costs, commuters can expect more affordable fares, making water transportation a more viable option. As the Lagos State Government continues to promote sustainable mobility, the introduction of electric-powered boats to the LAGFERRY fleet is a significant step towards achieving this goal. The state government’s efforts to provide affordable and eco-friendly transportation options are likely to have a positive impact on the environment and the lives of residents.
