Igbo Leader Condemns Endorsement of Tinubu Amid Kanu’s Detention

A former chairman of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Eugene Ogu, has criticized the endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in 2027 by some South-East political leaders. Ogu’s comments come as the Katsina State government has released 70 convicted bandits as part of peace-building efforts, a move that has been met with widespread criticism.

The cleric argued that supporting the ruling All Progressives Congress without the release of pro-Biafra leader Nnamdi Kanu would be detrimental to the Igbo people. He accused South-East political leaders of failing to demonstrate a genuine commitment to the welfare of their people, particularly in securing Kanu’s release.

Ogu urged Igbo individuals and organizations, both at home and abroad, to reject the recent endorsement of President Tinubu. He called on various groups, including professionals, traders, students, and transporters, to disassociate themselves from the endorsement, which he described as “embarrassing.” The endorsement reportedly took place during an APC meeting in Enugu State.

The release of the convicted bandits in Katsina State has sparked controversy, with many criticizing the move as a threat to national security. In contrast, Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, remains in detention despite calls for his release. Ogu’s statement highlights the perceived disparity in the treatment of different groups and individuals in Nigeria.

The endorsement of President Tinubu by some South-East leaders has significant implications for the region’s political landscape. Ogu’s criticism of the move reflects the concerns of many Igbo people who feel that their leaders have not adequately represented their interests. As the 2027 presidential election approaches, the dynamics of Nigerian politics are likely to become increasingly complex, with various groups and individuals vying for power and influence.

The situation underscores the need for political leaders to prioritize the welfare and concerns of their constituents. The release of Nnamdi Kanu and the treatment of pro-Biafra activists remain contentious issues, with many calling for a more nuanced approach to addressing the region’s grievances. As the political landscape continues to evolve, it is likely that these issues will remain at the forefront of national discourse.
