Burkina Faso sacks coach after Africa Cup exit

Burkina Faso’s football federation has terminated the contract of national team coach Brama Traoré and his assistants, citing the team’s underwhelming performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. The Stallions’ early exit from the tournament, where they lost 3-0 to defending champions Ivory Coast in the round of 16, fell short of the federation’s objectives.

The federation expressed disappointment with the team’s showing, stating that it had failed to meet expectations. Prior to the tournament, the goal was to reach at least the semi-finals, building on the team’s positive momentum and respectable performances in previous editions. However, Burkina Faso’s elimination in the round of 16 marked a repeat of their performance in the previous tournament.

In contrast, the team had shown promise in the 2021 edition, reaching the semi-finals before losing to eventual champions Senegal. The federation acknowledged Traoré’s service since 2024 and assured supporters and partners that a new selection process for the technical staff would begin immediately.

Burkina Faso’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup has added to the sense of disappointment. Attention now shifts to the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be co-hosted by Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda. The federation’s decision to part ways with Traoré and his assistants underscores the need for improvement and a fresh approach as the team looks to regain its footing in international competitions.

The change in leadership is expected to bring a new dynamic to the team, with the federation seeking to capitalize on the country’s football talent and potential. As the search for a new coach begins, Burkina Faso’s football fans will be watching closely, hoping for a turnaround in the team’s fortunes. With the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on the horizon, the federation’s swift action aims to set the team on a path towards redemption and success.
